Santa Ana man pleads guilty in deadly brawl in Orange

A 23-year-old Santa Ana man pleaded guilty Friday, Sept. 11, and was immediately sentenced to seven years in prison in connection with a deadly assault in a bar in Orange.

Vidal Almazan Jr. pleaded guilty to a felony count of assault with force likely to produce great bodily injury with a sentencing enhancement for inflicting great bodily injury. As part of the plea deal, a murder charge was dismissed. Almazan has been in jail since July 30, 2018.

Co-defendant Antonio Jesus Brito, 21, who is next due in court Dec. 11, faces the same charge. A murder charge against Brito was dismissed June 23.

Co-defendant Daniel Almazan is charged with murder and assault with force likely to produce great bodily injury with a sentencing enhancement for inflicting great bodily injury. Daniel Almazan is a fugitive, according to court records.

The three are accused in connection with the July 29, 2018, bar brawl that led to the killing of 25-year-old Nicholas Glynn of Orange, retired Senior Deputy District Attorney Scott Simmons said when he filed charges two years ago.

The bar fight apparently was triggered by a dispute “over a girl,” between the victim, his friend and the suspects, Simmons said.

Glynn and a friend got into a fight with the suspects at the District Lounge, 223 W. Chapman Ave., Simmons said.

They all eventually were kicked out and as Glynn and his friend, whose name was not released, were walking away down the street, the suspects drove by, got out of the car and the deadly stabbing ensued, Simmons said.

Daniel Almazan is accused of stabbing Glynn while Brito and Almazan allegedly beat the other victim, who needed 44 stitches in his face, Simmons said.
