Former Cypress pitcher Jackson Ronningen dies

Former Cypress High pitcher Jackson Ronningen died this past weekend, according to Williams College in Massachusetts, the school Ronningen was attending this fall as a freshman.

The cause of death was not disclosed by Williams College in a written announcement to its school community. The school’s statement noted that Jackson began “to study in person this fall, then switched to remote study in late September. He expressed an interest in economics and chemistry, but baseball was his great love …”

Ronningen was a right-handed starting pitcher for Cypress during the 2020 season that was cut short by the coronavirus pandemic. As a junior in 2019, he pitched 12 2/3 innings to help Cypress win the CIF Southern Section Division 1 championship.

The school’s statement on Ronningen’s death included: “Jackson believed that baseball taught him resilience and perseverance. That notion is echoed in his admission essay, which reads in part: ‘I continue to set lofty goals for myself, ignoring the scoffers and doubters along the way. I live life with determination, on my toes, reaching way up for the sky — which I will continue to do at Williams College.’ ”
